What to expect in Tulum?
Tulum is located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, in the Riviera Maya. In recent years, the city has become more refined, due to the influx of wealthier travelers, so prices in Tulum are more expensive than similar resort areas in the Yucatán.
Language: Spanish is the primary language spoken by the locals, although most people working in the tourism sector also speak relatively good English.
Currency: The Mexican peso is the local currency of Tulum.
Credit Cards and Banks: High-end restaurants and hotels accept Visa and Mastercard payments, but your best bet is to always have cash with you.
Safety: Tulum is a safe place, but like any destination, don't leave your belongings unattended. You can walk at night, use your resourcefulness and be aware of your surroundings.
Climate: Average high temperatures in Tulum remain around 30 ° C throughout the year. The wettest period of the year is between June and October, while the busiest season for tourism is the dry period between December and April.
Getting around Tulum
Tulum is a small city, but it is divided into three main areas. Most things are a bit of a walk, so consider renting a bike or calling a local taxi!
Tulum Town: The principal area of the city is located just off Highway 307, while the beach is a little further out and is home to several spas and luxury hotels. This is where the banks, shops, cafes and small nightlife district are located, and it's the first part of Tulum you'll see when you arrive.
Tulum Beach: This beautiful Caribbean beach is where those looking to relax and unwind head for. It's home to a gorgeous white-sand beach, lovely restaurants, and a few boutique hotels and spas.
Tulum Ruins: The ruins are a short distance from the city of Tulum. There are plenty of taxis in all three of Tulum's neighborhoods, but you can also rent a bike if you prefer to get around on your own. This is where you can explore Mayan ruins that date from the 13th to 15th centuries.
