La industria farmacéutica y sus enormes beneficios
A report by the BBC shows that the pharmaceutical industry has the highest profit margins compared to most other sectors of business. This almost translates to ‘if you want to get rich, open a pharmaceutical company’. The report shows that the profit margins of pharmaceutical companies are far more superior to those of oil and gas firms. Yes! You read that right. The pharmaceutical industry has also dwarfed the profits made by car makers and the media. So are the numbers of sick people swelling by the day? No. It’s the prices of pharmaceutical products that are buoying the profit margins.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of brand name Viagra, is taking one of the top ranks in terms of revenue and profitability amongst pharmaceutical companies. From 2014, the company has been enjoying total annual revenues to the tune of about $50 billion. When the costs of production and other inputs are factored in, the company still realizes massive profits. Despite the many lawsuits that have involved Pfizer, the huge fines they have had to pay and the hefty advertisement expenses, they still ride high with peaks of up to 42% profit. Again it all goes back to their overpriced products which seem to cover all expenses and still leave them with good gains.
What is the true cost of Viagra? In the real sense, the production of Viagra does not cost so much. Pfizer and the other makers of branded meds always justify the high prices with claims that they spend a lot on research and development. While it is true that they incur high expenses, this does not correlate with the high prices of the meds. A report by a group of federal budget analysts indicates that the value of the active ingredient is not always as high as manufacturers put it. The market price of some meds was found to be as high as 1000 times the general cost of the active ingredient. This points out just how oppressive the prices of medications can be.
The manufacturers have also come out to defend their price tags saying that the value of medication is very high. Reading between the lines, you might as well conclude that they are saying meds are practically priceless. Some have argued that although these medications cost a lot, in the long run, they solve problems that would have cost the user even more money.
